tag And Loving It tag Minnesota Wild Race 2007 Ranked Full 4 Coed 4 The crux of the race happened on a mountain bike leg where the best way to get from one checkpoint to the next appeared on the map to be a trail that was shown going through a lowlands/marshy area. When we got to this spot, the trail disappeared into the water, and it looked like this would go on for miles. When we got there, Kathy refused to go into the muck and insisted that there must be a better way. Though there was no other trail marked on the map, we did backtrack a bit and find what ended up being an unmarked logging road that stayed on high ground as it worked its way around the lowlands. I was worried that we would get hopelessly lost, but the road eventually turned and rejoined the original trail past the lowlands. We were the only team to find and use this route. By riding this relatively easy dirt road, we leapfrogged almost every other team in the race. Everyone else carried their bikes through chest high water and deep mud for miles. The race volunteers at the next transition were astounded to see us dry and relatively clean as we pulled in. This was the best navigation decision we have ever made in an adventure race. Teams
